Husbandry Services

Our certified animal technicians are available to provide wide array of husbandry care and services for all animals. 

Services include, but not limited to:  

  • Cage changing and cage washing
  • Providing water and food to animals
  • Cleaning and maintenance of animal rooms, equipment and facilities
  • Receiving animal shipments and transferring animals to cages to their rooms

Husbandry staff can also help investigators with additional caging and supplies on an as-needed basis, and with special housing and husbandry requests. Please contact the facility supervisor for animal husbandry requests.  

NOTE: It is important that research personnel contact the area supervisor before starting to use any biological or hazardous chemicals in animals.

Animal Training/Housing FAQs

  • The Rutgers University Comparative Medicine Resources (CMR) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) have a required education program that must be completed by all personnel who work with animals in either research, testing, or teaching (faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and contract personnel). Before access is granted to animal facilities, all new animal users are required to completed training requirements. Please visit Training and Development for further details.

  • Cages are available in the following three ways:

    1. Supplies are available on a cart/rack in room.
    2. Request is filled out and submitted to the facility supervisor (done when you need a large or specific amount).
    3. Caging is centrally located outside or near cage wash area in most facilities.
