Veterinary Externships

Program Overview

Offered to veterinary students who are interested in laboratory animal medicine, our externship programs let the participants fully experience the day-to-day activities of veterinarians and residents at Rutgers University.

Externs shadow veterinary staff and participate in any activities that are ongoing during their visit, including meetings and resident didactic training. Externs will gain clinical and technical skills with laboratory animals, knowledge in regulatory topics and laboratory animal medicine, and a better understanding of what it means to be a laboratory animal veterinarian.

Externships are flexible, based upon the needs of the student, but typically run for 2-4 weeks. The primary location is also up to the student, but options include splitting time between the North (Newark) and South (Piscataway/New Brunswick) Rutgers facilities or spending the entire externship at only one location. Hours are typically 8am-5pm, and some after hours, self-directed study.

Externs are expected to give a presentation on a topic of their choice at the end of the externship period.
