Mandatory Training

Controlled Substance Initial and Refresher training are required as set forth in the University Policy for all University Personnel working with CS in research, teaching, and clinical veterinary care of research animals.  Prior to requesting and receiving a controlled substance, PI and lab members must have an approved animal protocol and complete mandatory initial training session.   

Topics that will be covered during the training include the following: 

• Federal and state regulations
• University policy
• Reporting spills, loss or theft
• Registration requirements
• Schedules of CS
• Ordering and receiving CS at the University
• Disposal and destruction
• Drug diversion
• Record keeping, record retention
• Expired CS
• Storage and security
• Leaving the program (ceasing use of CS)
• Inventory, reconciliation, accountability

Registering for Controlled Substance Initial Training: Initial CS training is provided through virtual live seminars scheduled through the Course Registration System (CRS). Please follow the steps below to view and register for training:

1. Login to Course Registration System (CRS)

2. Select "Animal Care Training" course category at the top of the registration page 

3.  Register for course titled: "In-Person Controlled Substances Initial Training".  Course ID is course00003294.

Annual Controlled Substance Refresher Training: Upon completion of the mandatory training, PI and lab members are required to take online refresher training is required every year.

Yearly online refresher training titled "Working with Controlled Substances at Rutgers" can be found under “Group Courses” on the AALAS Learning Library. AALAS Learning Library can be accessed through ‘Orientation Training’ on eIACUC.  Visual instructions on how to access the refresher training available here .
