The Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (RUBHC) Center for Integrated Care was recently awarded a $1.35 million grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to expand training in integrated care for doctoral psychology students in a three-year project called the Rutgers University Integrated Substance Use Disorder Internship Program (RUISIP).

This project is led by Principal Investigator (PI) and Program Director (PD) Holly Lister, PhD, Psychologist and Program Coordinator for the RUBHC Center for Integrated Care, Co-PI Stephanie Marcello, PhD, Assistant VP of Academics, Integration, and Innovation at RUBHC, Co-I Kristen Riley, PhD, Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP), Co-I Lynn Clemow, PhD, Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health, and Project Manager Anna Marie Toto, EdM, Center for Integrated Care Program Analyst at RUBHC.

Continuing RUBHC’s multi-project collaboration with the Rutgers School of Social Work (SSW), Jamey Lister, PhD, SSW Assistant Professor, will design and lead the evaluation and continuous quality improvement for this initiative.

The RUISIP will add four internship positions focused on integrated care and substance/opioid use disorder treatment to RUBHC’s APA-Accredited Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology. In addition to providing intensive clinical training for doctoral psychology interns from national psychology graduate programs, RUISIP will also provide clinical training experiences for doctoral psychology students at GSAPP, and support psychology faculty and supervisors to provide and maintain integrated care and integrated SUD training at Rutgers University long-term.

This project comes one year after a HRSA award to the RUBHC Center for Integrated Care to expand integrated care programming and behavioral health training for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, and social workers in medically underserved areas in New Jersey (https://research.rutgers.edu/news/rutgers-continues-improve-health-outcomes-expansion-behavioral-health-training-and-treatment).

The RUISIP advances the mission of the RUBHC Center for Integrated Care to promote integrated care education, training, and services in partnership with other Rutgers health services departments and community-based clinics in New Jersey.
