Minimizing or reversing coral reef loss is critical both for human populations that rely on these resources for their livelihood and more broadly, for preserving the remarkable biodiversity associated with reefs. Medical science has been revolutionized by the application of sophisticated tools such as genomics to treat human disease. Debashish Bhattacharya, PhD, of the department of biochemistry and microbiology, will discuss how these so-called "omics" tools can be used to build a foundation for coral conservation efforts.
