Variety: Monmouth Principal Investigator(s): Thomas Molnar, Shawn Mehlenbacher, John Capik
Strengths & Qualities
High yielding tree that produces medium size, round kernels that blanch very well, making it suitable for a variety of confectionary and baked good applications as well as for direct eating especially when roasted
The raw kernels have very little fiber thus are also suitable for eating raw
Moderately vigorous tree with a slightly spreading, rounded growth habit
Trees at 15 years can reach over 20 feet tall
Has a very high level of tolerance to EFB (high quantitative resistance)
No fungicide sprays are expected to be needed for production although regular scouting for cankers and removal of infected branches, if ever present, are recommended
'Monmouth' nuts have attractive light- to medium-brown shells
'Monmouth' nuts fall both in the husk and free from the husk in about equal proportions typically during the 1st half of September
While a significant portion of the nuts drop in the husk, they roll out cleanly when passed through a harvester or are easily removed by hand once partially dried
Regarding pollination, 'Monmouth' has S-alleles 1 and 12 with both expressed in the pollen. It blooms in the early part of the season in New Jersey
