Variety: Aurora® Principal Investigator(s): Elwin Orton, Frederick Reynolds, David Gant, Constance Gant
Strengths & Qualities
The flower heads have large flowers (bracts) that are velvety and heavily textured in appearance. The flowers are white and become creamy-white as they age.
Aurora® has a reputation as a heavy bloomer with a mass of flowers to appreciate
This variety is more spreading in growth habit than the other white varieties
Plants of Aurora® are very vigorous in growth and extremely hardy
The period of flowering in the spring is quite like that of Celestial® and Stellar Pink®, and starts a few days after flowering periods for Ruth Ellen®, Stardust® and Constellation® begin and five to seven days after the completion of the flowering for most American dogwoods
At the peak of the bloom period, the flowers are so dense that very little of the foliage on the tree shows through
Aurora® trees are about 20 to 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide at 20 years of age
Aurora® has good resistance to the diseases powdery mildew and anthracnose
Has displayed a high level of winter hardiness – USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6
