Rutgers Health Scientific Review Board: Non-Oncology Studies

Overview

The Rutgers Health- Scientific Review Board, which falls under the auspices of NJACTS, is tasked to review non-oncology investigator-initiated protocols. The protocols submitted to the Rutgers Health-SRB will be reviewed to assess proper statistical design, enrollment goals, feasibility (including adequate research staffing, competing trials, funding, resources, and departmental support) to help streamline IRB approval and to help with study success.

The Rutgers Health Scientific Review Board (SRB) looks to ensure that the scientific question being asked within a protocol is relevant and that the design of the protocol is appropriate to answer that question.

The SRB review will primarily focus on the elements of good scientific study design. Proposals will be evaluated for the following criteria:

• Clarity of the research question
• Appropriateness and efficiency of design
• Rigor and feasibility of methods
• Qualifications and expertise of the research team
• Scholarship and pertinence of background material and rationale
• Adequacy of sample size and relevance of controls
• Validity of the statistical analysis plan

Submission Criteria for Rutgers Health SRB

All off the following criteria must be met for submission:

• Principal Investigator must be an Rutgers Health faculty member outside of RCI
• Rutgers Health investigator-initiated protocols only (i.e., not sponsored by industry or an NIH consortium)
• Study entails obtaining consent of study participants
